The Security Guard Shift Lead is a 24/7 shift position responsible for the "day of" oversight, supervision, coordination and support of a front-line team of security guards assigned to security patrol, inspection and response within a critical infrastructure downtown Toronto. The Shift Lead is the primary "day of" point of contact for the client and as such is responsible for coordinating "day of" activities, challenges and changing requirements and appropriately respond to emerging operational issues, events or activities.

Shift Leads are responsible for proactively supporting the day of operation by ensuring effective and efficient operations and providing quality customer service to passengers through the daily leadership and supervision of the on-shift team. This is attained through oversight of the team's completion of daily work plan, adjusting priorities and resource allocations to meet demand and ensuring the team's adherence to established performance standards and protocols. Leads are responsible for security guard performance management/monitoring, on-the-job training/coaching, maintaining time and attendance records and for ensuring compliance with company and client policies and procedures as well as government regulations.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Takes direction from the designated client contact and maintains an open line of communication to help ensure the delivery of quality services;
  • Oversight and supervision of assigned team's daily work plan, adjusting priorities and resource allocations to meet demand and ensuring the team's adherence to established performance standards and protocols;
  • Ensures sufficient, qualified, properly trained guard resources consistent with shift schedule and contacts Resource Planning to schedule staff for emergency relief, and substitutes or replacements when required;
  • Attends and participates in any required client Operations/Security Briefings to coordinate activities and address specific needs/issues;
  • Ensures all Post Orders/SOP's, directions and instructions are promptly and efficiently followed and performed and complied with to the satisfaction of the client;
  • Monitors and enforces all designated safety, security and operational procedures and directives applicable to the performance of the Service and reports any breaches of security, safety/security deficiencies, system/equipment failures immediately to the client;
  • Provides team leadership and direction in emergencies and liaises with and assists Client Corporate Security, police and emergency personnel during emergencies;
  • Investigates all problems, complaints, incidents, events and deficiencies and submits a formal report of all findings and recommended corrective action to the Service Deliver Manager and Client representative and implements appropriate corrective action after obtaining approval from Manager and/or client;
  • Performs daily performance/quality control shift inspections of Posts, employees and equipment to ensure conformance to client and company policies/procedures and service/performance expectations relative to:
    • Employee knowledge of Post Orders, including Amendments/Deviations;
    • Ensure guards understand and perform their assigned duties in a competent manner and meet or exceed established Performance Standards and expectations;
    • Verification that Guard logbooks and/or note books are effectively maintained and that records and reports are legible, neat and concise and in the approved format;
    • Incident/Occurrence Reports completed in a clear, factual manner prior to end of shift;
    • Validation that guards are dressed in appropriate uniform and are properly equipped;
  • Prepares Daily Operational Shift Summary Reports, Shift Inspection Reports, Incident/Occurrence and Non-Conformance Reports for all incidents/events, complaints or deficiencies discovered;
  • Conducts new recruit OJT training and random OJT In-Field training modules for existing security guard staff;
  • Assists with performance management and discipline of security guards assigned to the site
  • Performs other duties and tasks as assigned by the Corporate Security Supervisor and or A.S.P. Service Delivery Manager

MANDATORY POSITION REQUIREMENTS & QUALIFICATIONS

Security Guard Shift Leads assigned must have experience in at least two (2) of the following categories:

  • Police experience or minimum of two (2 years of Canadian Armed Forces experience;
  • A graduate from a recognized community college in the field of law enforcement and security administration;
  • A minimum of two (2) years proven experience in a related security function including experience in completing the Security Guards duties and responsibilities.

Successful completion of all required training/certification courses, including the initial and annual recurrent Guard Training/Certification is a pre-requisite for employment;

  • Basic Security Guard Training (Pre-Deployment)
  • A.S.P. Orientation Training (Pre-Deployment)
  • First Aid, CPR and AED certification (Pre-Deployment)
  • AODA (Pre-Deployment)
  • Use of Force certification (Pre-Deployment)
  • Health & Safety & WHMIS Training (Pre-Deployment)
  • Customer Service Training (within 6 months of Deployment)
  • Behaviour Observation Training (within 6 months of Deployment)
  • International Foundation for Protection Officers (IFPO), Certified Protection Officer Certification (within 6 months of Deployment;
  • IFPO Security Supervision & Management Program (SSMP) or other recognized security industry certification (e.g. CPP) as approved within six months of deployment

In addition, Shift Leads, must possess all of the following additional experience and key qualifications:

  • Licenced by the Province of Ontario as a registered Security Guard and must maintain the licence for the duration of employment;
  • Demonstrated experience in providing first line supervision to Security Guard staff;
  • Demonstrated ability to provide work direction to front line staff and utilized staff resources
  • Highly developed problem solving and conflict resolution skills;
  • Knowledge of the Ontario Occupational Health and Safety Act and WHMIS;
  • Comprehensive knowledge of common security policies and various Acts and Codes, including the Criminal Code and the Trespass to Property Act;
  • Experience in providing Security Services in a public environment;
  • Experience with computerized office systems, MS Office applications (Word, Excel);
  • Ability to operate and maintain computerized state of the art security equipment;
  • Ability to react and resolve emergency crisis situations in a proper manner;
  • Strong communication and report writing skills;
